Epic Games may be planning to make a Fortnite movie. This is reported by sources from tech medium The Information, who state that the game giant also wants to set up an entertainment division. It is not known when this should happen.
The Information writes that Epic Games is looking to diversify its entertainment plans. The company is currently embroiled in legal disputes with Apple and Google, which have damaged Epic’s ability to expand into the mobile market, according to the tech medium. The intended entertainment division could, among other things, develop a feature film based on Fortnite. Sources from The Information report that such a film has already been discussed.
Epic Games is said to have hired several LucasFilm executives in the early months of 2021, including Jason McGatlin, former vice president of physical production at that film company. Among other things, McGatlin was one of the producers of the Star Wars films released under Disney and is now president of special projects at Epic, the medium claims. The company is also said to have hired former LucasFilm employees Lynn Bartsch and Chris Furia. Those two employees now hold the positions of head of business affairs and vice president of production finance at Epic Games, respectively.
It is not known when a possible Fortnite feature film should be released. Epic Games has not released feature films before, but has been providing Fortnite with cinematic cutscenes, live events and special play modes for some time, including a Marvel crossover and an event based on the Batman franchise, Eurogamer also writes. The company’s Unreal Engine has also been used for some time for making films and series, such as Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian.
