Embracer and Amazon announce Lord of the Rings MMO
Investment firm Embracer Group and Amazon Games announce that a new Lord of the Rings game is in development. It’s about a LotR MMO in a ‘persistent world’. The game is set to release globally for PC and consoles at an unannounced time.
Although details are scarce, writes Embracer that it is an open world game and that the game naturally takes place in JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings universe. It’s not clear how the game compares to the iconic Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books and movies. The game is in early development at Amazon Games Orange County studio. This developer was previously responsible for the mmorpg New World.
With the announcement of the Lord of the Rings MMO, it is clear which five games within the franchise Embracer is working on. The Swedish game company investor bought Middle-earth Enterprises last year and with it the rights to the Lord of the Rings IP. Embracer Group includes various studios, of which at least five are working on a game within the fantasy franchise. Those are Gollum, Return to Moria, Heroes of Middle-Earth, a Weta game and thus this Lord of the Rings MMO.
