Elon Musk: It won’t be long before a Tesla reaches 644km range
During a meeting of Tesla shareholders, CEO Elon Musk said in a presentation that it will not be long before the company is releasing a car that can achieve a range of 400 miles or 644 kilometers on a single battery charge.
Musk did not go into detail about this statement during his Mountain View appearance; for example, he did not indicate whether the 400 miles will be broken by updating an existing model with better battery technology, or, for example, by a new model such as the Model Y, which should be on the market from next year.
Musk showed, among other things, a graph in which the maximum range of several electric passenger cars was put next to each other. According to the data shown, all Tesla models, but especially the Model S, still stand out above the rest. “No electric car has surpassed the range of the first Model S of 2012,” Musk said. The Model S gets 370 miles or 595 km according to the EPA approval.
He couldn’t help but poke fun at competitors, such as the Audi e-Tron. In an earlier slide on energy efficiency in terms of miles per kWh, the Model 3 comes out best at almost 4 miles per kWh. This data is based on EPA measurements and therefore not the wltp standard commonly used in Europe. In the slide shown, the Audi e-tron is just above 2 miles per kWh, prompting Musk to report with a somewhat subdued laugh that there is “room for improvement” with the e-tron.
The Tesla CEO also briefly discussed the capacity to drive Tesla cars completely autonomously. “Every car we’ve made since October 2016 has the capacity for full autonomy with just replacing the computer.” He is referring to the self-designed chip presented in April. to make, although Musk had to acknowledge that government approval is still required.
