Electronic Arts raises Steam prices on many of its games

Game publisher Electronic Arts has significantly increased the prices on many of its games on Steam over the past week. These are increases of 25 percent, 33 percent and even 100 percent. Prices on EA’s own Origin platform have remained the same.

It is unknown why prices have gone up. It is also not clear what the logic behind it is. For example, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Dragon Age: Origins and Spore have become 25 to 100 percent more expensive on Steam, but Mass Effect 2 has remained the same, although that game already costs 20 euros. The games in question are nine to twelve years old. Changes also vary widely by region, with the US, for example, not being affected at all. The table below this article lists a selection of EA’s Steam offerings.

In some cases, the Origin version of a game was already cheaper than on Steam, so this move has widened that gap further. The only exception seems to be The Sims 3, that game has gone from 39.99 euros to 19.99 euros, but 39.99 euros was already exceptionally expensive for an 11 year old game.

Since the launch of EA’s Origin platform in 2011, there have been relatively few EA games on Steam. However, last fall, the game publisher announced that it would be returning to Valve’s platform. As part of that, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has been released on Steam. Games to follow include Apex Legends, Battlefield V, Unravel Two, and more.
