Electric Maserati GranTurismo Folgore gets 92.5kWh battery and 800V charging system
Maserati has shared the first technical details of the GranTurismo Folgore. This car will be the first all-electric car from the Italian brand and also the first car from a Stellantis manufacturer with an 800V charging system.
The electric GranTurismo gets a 92.5 kWh battery, of which net 83kWh is usable. It is not clear how far the car can drive with this; Maserati does not yet share a WLTP range. The manufacturer does say that the car can drive ‘up to 100 kilometers’ after five minutes with 270 kW fast charging.
That 270kW fast charging is done via the 800V charging system. Maserati is not the first manufacturer to equip a car with an 800V charging system. Kia, Hyundai, Porsche and Audi, among others, already preceded the manufacturer. Maserati is the first Stellantis manufacturer to equip a car with such a charging system. This parent company had previously indicated that it wanted to make cars with 800V charging systems.
Usually electric cars are equipped with a 400V charging system. The advantage of an 800V system is that a car can be charged faster and can also supply more power to, for example, the engines. The battery of the GranTurismo Folgore can supply a maximum of 560kW to the three motors, which have a maximum power of 300kW. The front wheels share a motor, the rear two wheels each have their own motor. In theory, the GranTurismo Folgore can deliver about 294kW, or 400hp, per rear wheel.
In practice, the car can therefore deliver a maximum of 560 kW, or 761 hp. The maximum torque is 1350Nm. The car must be able to reach 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds and 200 km/h in 8.8 seconds. The top speed is 320 km/h. The 800V charging system also means the regenerative brakes can return more power to the battery, with up to 400kW in ‘optimum conditions’. That equates to a delay of 0.65g. The Folgore supports pre-conditioning, to get the battery to the right temperature when close to a fast charger. This allows the battery to be charged faster.
Maserati sells the GranTurismo as an electric car and as a car with a combustion engine. So it is not a car that was developed from the ground up as an EV. It is not yet clear when the car will go on sale and how much it will cost.
