Echtra Games is no longer working on Torchlight III
Developer Echtra Games is stopping work on Torchlight III. After the Spring Update, there will be no further innovations from the studio to the game. Echtra Games was recently acquired by Zynga and is going to work on another project.
Torchlight III has been transferred back to Perfect World Entertainment, the Chinese company that owns the rights to the game. It is not yet clear whether another developer on behalf of Perfect World will be responsible for further development of Torchlight III.
Max Schaefer, founder of Echtra Games, writes that the latest update brings several improvements in addition to new content. On all platforms where the game is available, the game would run better after the update. “We feel this update puts Torchlight III in a good place,” Schaefer said.
Zynga, known for mobile games and browser games, acquired Echtra Games in March. Echtra Games does not own the rights to Torchlight itself, so Zynga cannot develop new games in that franchise without permission. Schaefer has been at the origin of both the Diablo and Torchlight franchises.
Under the care of Zynga, Echtra Games is working on a new rpg, which will be playable on ‘multiple platforms’. The studio works together with NaturalMotion for this; the Zynga studio behind smartphone game CSR Racing 2.
