The European Commission has announced that it will carry out an audit of the source code of two open source programs, looking for vulnerabilities. These are the password manager KeePass and the web server software Apache.

The choice for these two programs is the result of a survey that was completed by 3,282 people. This was held as part of the FOSSA project, with which the European Union wants to ensure that users can rely on commonly used software. The audits are part of a pilot programme.

The survey was conducted between 17 June and 8 July on the basis of a pre-selection by the European Commission. Keepass and Apache emerged as winners, with 23.1 percent and 18.7 percent of the vote, respectively. The video software VLC came in third place and thus fell by the wayside.

The audit is carried out in collaboration with the teams behind the open source projects and they will be informed of the vulnerabilities found. One of the founders of the FOSSA project is MEP Julia Reda. She writes that a request has been made to extend the project by two to three years.
