EA’s Defense of Battlefront II Loot Boxes Gets Guinness Downvote Record
EA has achieved a record recognized by Guinness World Records, although the publisher will probably not be very pleased with it. It is the most downvoted Reddit comment, in which the publisher tried to defend the loot box practices in Star Wars.
A Reddit user posted a photo of the 2020 Guinness World Record. Specifically, it relates to a response dated November 12, 2017, in which Electronic Arts officially responded to a message from a Battlefront II player complaining about paying $80 for the Deluxe edition of the game, but still not being able to access it. had to the Darth Vader character.
At the time, EA wrote: “The aim is for players to feel a sense of pride and satisfaction from unlocking certain heroes.” That quickly led to a storm of criticism, as witnessed by the fact that within a day the number of downvotes rose to 230,000, which was already a downvote record on Reddit at the time. That number of negative votes has risen to 683,000.
Criticisms included the huge amount of time players had to spend to unlock content. The publisher already indicated in late October 2017 that it would adjust the loot boxes and two weeks after that, EA announced that it would lower the in-game prices of certain characters such as Darth Vader. A few days later, microtransactions were even temporarily deactivated.
