Rumor has it that a new Knights of the Old Republic game, a game set in the Star Wars universe, is in the works. EA and BioWare would not be involved. It is not yet clear which studio will own the project.

Star Wars Insider Bespin Bulletin says heard from multiple sources that a new Kotor game is being developed and that EA is not involved. That means the game is not made by BioWare. At the end of last year, game journalist Jason Schreider hinted that a new Kotor project is in development somewhere, which ‘nobody will guess’ who is making.

Earlier this month, it became clear that EA no longer has an exclusive license to make Star Wars games. That was according to an announcement from Ubisoft. Massive Entertainment, the studio behind Tom Clancy’s The Division, is working on a new open world game set in the Star Wars universe. Details about this are not yet known.

Disney re-established Lucasfilm Games earlier in January. Under that banner, new Star Wars games are being developed in collaboration with other publishers and studios. EA had an exclusive license to make Star Wars games on behalf of Disney since 2012.

Years ago there were rumors of a remake of Kotor, which should have been released in 2016. Those plans would have been shelved, but in early 2020 there was a rumor that development had resumed and that it might be a completely new game.

The Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic games are single-player RPGs. The first part appeared in 2003 and was made by BioWare. The second part, The Sith Lords, was released in 2005 and was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. BioWare also had a third installment in development, but that project has been scrapped.
