EA wants to use parts of original source code C&C and Red Alert for remaster
EA has obtained large parts of the original source code of Command & Conquer and Red Alert. The developer wants to use the source code of the original game for Command & Conquer Remastered, if it is actually usable.
EA producer Jim Vessella reports on the Command & Conquer subreddit that the developer, together with the team at Petroglyph Games, is investigating the extent to which the code can be applied. The founders of Petroglyph are ex-employees of Westwood Studios, the original developer of the C&C series.
The reason for using the original source code is to mimic the gameplay of C&C from 1995 as much as possible, explains Vessella. “Our goal is to make a remaster, not a remake. However, there are many aspects where the original source code does not meet the quality or functionality we want to see in many of the supporting elements,” the producer writes.
In addition, Petroglyph will be using its GlyphX engine for the remaster. The rts Gray Goo, which was also developed by the studio and released in 2015, is based on this engine. By applying the engine, the developers hope that the original models and sound effects from C&C will come out better.
Command & Conquer Remastered was announced in December. A month earlier, EA announced that it was partnering with Pertroglyph Games on remasters for Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert.
