EA to hold Apex Legends tournament with $500,000 in prize money in September
Electronic Arts is organizing an open Apex Legends tournament with a prize pool of $500,000 in total, equivalent to approximately $448,000. The event will be held in the Polish city of Krakow on September 13, 14 and 15. There must be a total of 240 participants.
EA and Respawn turn it into a double elimination tournament, where a team has to lose twice before it is out of the tournament. The first place team gets to split $105,000 and the one with the most kills can earn an additional $8,000.
Teams can register by emailing EA with their Origin username and email address, but it’s not clear on what grounds participants are invited. Whoever is eventually invited will still have to pay 150 dollars to register their team, according to the rules. It is also possible to attend the event as a spectator.
The tournament is not the first competitive Apex Legends event. Tournaments with professional participants are also held in July and August, but the rosters for those are already set and the prize pools are smaller than in this new event.
Apex Legends came out unannounced in early February this year for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. The battleroyale game was a success with both reviewers and gamers, and several innovations were adopted by competitors such as Fortnite and PUBG after its release. Unlike those competitors, Apex Legends only has a game mode where twenty teams of three players compete against each other; there is no solo or duo mode.
