EA ends Battlefield Heroes
Electronic Arts will discontinue the free-to-play titles Battlefield Heroes, Battlefield Play4Free, FIFA World, and Need for Speed World. The games wouldn’t be popular enough anymore. The servers will go offline for good on July 14.
As of today, the mentioned games are no longer supported. People with an account can continue to play, but the registration for new users is closed. In addition, it is no longer possible to buy in-game currency. Users who still have outstanding credit can spend it until EA takes the servers offline in 90 days. Then it is no longer possible to play.
Of the titles that will soon be discontinued, FIFA World is by far the youngest. The game first came out 18 months ago and isn’t even officially out of beta yet. The other titles are between four and six years old. In 2012, Battlefield Heroes and Need for Speed World each reached the 10 million player mark. According to Patrick Söderlund, executive vice president of EA Studios, the games are no longer as popular as they used to be. Star Wars: The Old Republic, another free-to-play EA title, does have potential, according to Söderlund.
