EA adds microtransactions for cosmetic tweaks to Battlefield V
Publisher EA and developer DICE have added microtransactions to Battlefield V. Players will be able to purchase Battlefield Currency with real money starting Thursday. Cosmetic adjustments and Time Savers can be purchased with this. There are no loot boxes.
For now, players can only buy cosmetic adjustments, EA writes in a faq. Later there will be an opportunity to buy Elite sets and Time Savers. The Elite sets will be added in Chapter 3 of Battlefield V, allowing players to play as a distinctive soldier in multiplayer matches. These are unique characters with their own story, voice-over, special animation and their own cosmetic items that only belong to that character. Using these Elites does not provide any gameplay benefits according to EA.
The Time Savers, which will be available later in the spring, will allow players to progress faster and earn more experience points. According to EA, these purchases are for players who don’t have the time to earn everything by playing the game.
For now, only cosmetic items are for sale. There will be new Epic items that can only be purchased with Battlefield Currency. It is still possible to purchase items with the free Company Coin, but not all cosmetic adjustments can be purchased with it. EA says it will add more cosmetic items in the future.
There are no loot boxes in Battlefield V. So players know what they are buying, there is no gambling element. Battlefield V was released over five months ago and it was not yet possible to spend in-game with real money. That EA would add microtransactions later, if already known before the game came out. The publisher promised at the time that spending money in the game would not provide any gameplay benefits.
