EA acquires streaming technology and workforce from cloud gaming company
Electronic Arts has acquired the cloud gaming technology of a subsidiary of the Israeli company GameFly. The staff also goes to the game publisher. EA wants to strengthen its position in cloud gaming.
Electronic Arts has not disclosed the amount for which it acquired the technology and associated personnel. The publisher says it wants to deepen its capabilities and expertise in the field of cloud gaming with the purchase. The acquisition would make it possible to explore new ways to give players access to games from any device, EA said. The acquisition has now been completed.
Last year, Electronic Arts chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said his company is working on a game streaming service. It should be operational within a few years. The company is working with an unnamed partner for this. It is not clear whether GameFly or the acquired GameFly subsidiary is this partner. The team acquired by EA is responsible for developing the GameFly game streaming service. This streaming service has not been acquired by EA, only the technology and the creators.
