E Ink develops screen with 32,768 colors
E-papermaker E Ink has shown a new screen that can display all colors per pixel without needing a color filter. E Ink calls the technology Advanced Color ePaper or ACeP. The screen type is primarily intended for ‘digital signage’.
The latter is because the maximum resolution and the refresh rate of ACeP are low. The screen shown has a screen diagonal of 20″ and a resolution of 1600×2500 pixels, which equates to 150ppi.
Compared to a black and white e-paper screen, that is low, a normal e-reader nowadays has a resolution of at least 250ppi. Another problem is that the refresh rate is low, about two seconds. This makes it useful as signage, but not for e-readers. According to E Ink, the energy consumption is still ‘very low’, just like the black and white variant. The screen is also easy to read in sunlight.
The company introduced the previous color electronic paper screens in 2010 under the name Triton. This type would respond just as quickly as the black and white variant, but can only display 4096 colors.
In addition, the company comes with flexible e-paper screens of 32 “E Ink Mobius. This system is also intended for digital signage and other public information systems.
