E Ink announces new color panels with more colors and higher contrast

E Ink has announced the E Ink Gallery Plus panels, displays that can display more colors and higher contrast than previous e-ink panels. Gallery Plus screens can show up to 60,000 colors and are primarily intended for information screens.

The Gallery Plus screens can display up to 60,000 colours, where the Triton screens can display up to 4096 colours. The contrast is also 40 percent higher, at 14:1. E Ink plans to produce the panels in various sizes, including 13.3, 25.3 and 28 inches.

With the panels, the company does not focus on e-readers and other consumer products, but on information screens for restaurants, shops and in public transport, for example. Here they have to replace printed posters and therefore they will be better for the environment, says E Ink. The panels would use little energy. The two largest panels would already be used in the Taipei metro.

The panels use Advanced Color ePaper, a screen type that E Ink unveiled six years ago. Then it was a 20″ panel with a resolution of 1600×2500 pixels. This screen also had a low refresh rate of two seconds. Therefore, the panels would not be suitable for e-readers, but for example for information boards.
