The E Ink company has demonstrated its JustWrite technology. It is a highly economical electronic paper on which users can make digital notes with virtually no latency.

The JustWrite layer that users can draw on is plastic, making it bendable, lightweight and durable, according to E Ink. It is a reflective screen with good contrast without a TFT backplane or backlight, the company further reports, without giving further details. JustWrite does not require any power to maintain its rendering. E-Ink demonstrates the technique at the Connected Ink 2018 event in Tokyo.

The company can produce rolls of the screens, as with its other electronic paper screens. Simple electronics are sufficient for the drive, so that production costs can probably remain low. The width is a maximum of 3 feet, or 91.44 cm. E Ink does not report anything about it, but the images from JustWrite, on The Verge, Boston Globe and Mashdigi, only show a black screen with white drawing, which makes the comparison with a chalkboard present itself.
