DSCC: Apple wants to place a camera and Face ID behind the screen of the iPhone Pro in 2027
Apple would like to equip the iPhone Pro with a selfie camera and Face ID module behind the screen in 2027. This is what analyst Ross Young of DSCC claims. In that year, the standard iPhone still had a hole for the camera, but with Face ID under the screen.
Young has posted a rendering of a roadmap of what Apple wants to do with the screens of iPhones in the coming years. All iPhones will have an LTPO screen from 2025, something that the Pro iPhones have had since 2021. From then on, a variable refresh rate will probably be possible on the phones. Young states on Twitter that the basic models will also have a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently, that feature is limited to the iPhone Pro devices; the entry-level models have a 60Hz screen.
This year’s iPhone 15 models will have a Dynamic Island, just like last year’s Pro models, Young says. From 2025, Dynamic Island will make way for a smaller camera hole on the Pro models. The Face ID hardware for facial recognition would then be located under the screen, while the camera hole should only house the selfie camera.
Young is considered a reliable analyst in the field of screen developments. Its track record on unannounced smartphones is virtually spotless.
