Dropbox limits number of signed-in devices per free account to three
As of March, users with a free Dropbox account will only be able to sign in with three devices at the same time. If you then try to log in with a fourth device, you must choose which device to log out, so that there are a maximum of three logged in devices.
The change is reflected in a Dropbox help page. According to the page, the change took effect in March. If you want to be able to log in with more than three devices at the same time, you must take out a subscription. The cheapest subscription is called Plus and costs ten euros per month. Users also receive extra storage space with the cloud storage service.
For people who were logged in with more than three devices before March, nothing changes until they log out or log in with an additional device. In the latter case, they will receive a message that they must again unlink a number of devices from the service in order not to exceed the maximum of three logged in devices.
Presumably, Dropbox does this to save money. Users with a free Basic account do not provide the service with a fixed income, while the service does cost money. By restricting these user accounts, Dropbox may be hoping to entice them to get a paid account. In 2017, Dropbox still had a net loss of nearly $100 million. That was less than the years before. Dropbox had 500 million users in 2017, of which only 11 million paid for the service.
