Dropbox is going to take Mailbox and Carousel apps offline
Dropbox will take its email app Mailbox and its photo gallery app Carousel offline on February 26 and March 31 of next year, respectively. Elements of the applications will, however, be processed in the future in, among other things, the company’s Sync app.
Dropbox will announce its decision on the Dropbox Blog. The Carousel functionality would be included in the Dropbox Sync app, according to the company, because the company “realized that users would prefer the simplicity and convenience of managing their photos within Dropbox itself.” Users’ carousel photos just stay where they are today: in Dropbox’s cloud storage. The company released Carousel in April 2014 and even bought several photo and photography companies. Amounts are not known for those purchases.
Mailbox is originally an iOS mail app that was acquired by the company in March 2013, again for an undisclosed amount. While Dropbox says “many of Mailbox’s innovations are now everywhere,” there’s “only so much you can do with an email app to fundamentally improve email.” Instead, the US company wants to focus on “streamlining workflows that lead to so much email in the first place.” As an example, the company cites Paper, the cloud word processor that allows users to collaborate. Dropbox says it has put a guide and tools online to make the transition to another email client easier. The last major update to Mailbox was in April this year, when the app got the Material Design on Android.
