Dota 2 has lowest number of concurrent players in three years
Dota 2 had a total of 842,919 concurrent players in the past 30 days at peak. Since August 2014, the game from developer Valve has not had such a relatively low number of players.
According to Steam Charts, an unofficial website that tracks player activity, the highest peak of 842,919 was on August 28. Throughout 2016, there were invariably one million concurrent Dota 2 players or more at peak times. Not only the numbers during the peak moments show a downward trend, the monthly average number of players who were online during a moment is also under some pressure. In September 2016, there were an average of 622,583 players, compared to 511,499 at the moment.
The downward trend in Dota 2 may have to do with the increasingly popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Recently, PUBG broke a record set by Dota 2; the battle royale game from developer Bluehole had a higher all-time peak than Dota 2 with more than 1.3 million players. That number has since risen considerably: On Saturday, during a peak moment, more than 1.5 million players were playing a round of PUBG.
Dota 2’s drop in player numbers may also be related to the popular and comparable League of Legends. Developer Riot Games generally gives little detail about the number of players and does not often release official figures, but the creator states that League of Legends has a total of more than 100 million active players every month; Dota 2 did not exceed 12.3 million in the past month. In March, that number was still 13.5 million at Dota 2.
