Donald Trump is allowed back on Instagram and Facebook
Meta daughters Facebook and Instagram have given Donald Trump his account back. Meta believes the risk to public safety has been sufficiently reduced, but has also called the ban impractical and bad for free speech.
Meta already announced last month that this moment was coming. The former president of the United States faces heavier penalties if he crosses the line again. If he again violates the platforms’ community guidelines, he could be banned again, lasting from one month to two years, depending on the seriousness of the offence. That let a spokesman know to Semafor, among others.
Donald Trump has served a total of two years of suspension. He was banned from the platform after he posted inflammatory messages online in the context of the storming of the US Capitol in 2021. At that time, the election result, a victory for Joe Biden, was formalized.
It remains to be seen whether the former president will use his Instagram and Facebook account. Twitter let Trump back onto the platform last November, but he has never tweeted there since. The former president has his own social medium, Truth Social, on which he is now active. This platform is based on Mastodon.
