Documents point to the arrival of smaller PlayStation 3
It looks like a minor version of the PlayStation 3 is coming; at least that’s according to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission. There are rumors that it will be presented at the German Gamescom fair.
Documents filed with the FCC indicate that Sony is working on a new series of the PlayStation 3, the 4000 series. This was discovered by the Japanese news site Pocket News. The submitted documents refer to a CECH-4001x model. The ‘x’ will later be replaced with a letter to indicate the hardware specifications. There are rumors that Sony will present the new variant next month at the German Gamescom fair. Sony has not yet commented on the findings.
Eurogamer asked at E3 this year whether it was true that Sony is working on a smaller version of the PlayStation 3. Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s global studio boss, reacted reluctantly. “We haven’t announced any new hardware revisions for the PS3, but you should never say never. We’re always looking for ways to make products cheaper and smaller.”
