Documents point to Apple self-driving car tests

Apple seems to be setting up a test program for a self-driving car. The tests are supposed to start in a closed-off facility near San Francisco. There have been rumors for some time about a self-driving car from Apple, possibly based on the BMW i3.

The Guardian obtained the documents by invoking the American equivalent of the Public Disclosure Act in California. The documents show that Apple has expressed interest in renting a large lot near San Francisco called GoMentum Station. This is an old naval base that has been transformed into an area where cars can be tested with ‘real’ traffic situations. The Cupertino company is said to be interested in secretly testing its car; the complex is guarded by military personnel.

The documents show that Apple has already expressed an interest in using the site in May. Furthermore, the details are unclear. The administrators of GoMentum Station have said that Apple has expressed interest, but they are not allowed to say anything further because it has been promised secrecy. Apple itself declined to comment on the Guardian’s coverage.

There have long been rumors about a self-driving car from Apple, which would be developed under the internal name Project Titan. Recent rumors indicate that Apple has been talking to BMW about developing a self-driving car based on the i3. It is unclear what stage these talks are at.
