Drone manufacturer DJI introduces its first cinema camera. This Ronin 4D has an integrated gimbal and lidar autofocus. The company is introducing two versions of the camera, which can record up to 6k and 8k raw videos respectively.

The DJI Ronin 4D is intended for professional filmmakers and includes a Zenmuse X9 camera with a full-frame sensor. The 6k variant supports a maximum video resolution of 6008×3168 pixels at 60fps, in addition to 4k120 recordings. The 8k model also supports 8k recording at a frame rate of 75 frames per second. Both variants offer ’14+’ stops of dynamic range, depending on the ISO used. The cameras also support the H.264 codec and Apple ProRes 422HQ and ProRes RAW.

The Zenmuse X9 camera module in the DJI Ronin 4D mounts as standard on a gimbal that provides four-axis image stabilization. The cinema camera also offers a lidar autofocus system. DJI claims that this should ensure faster and more accurate autofocus, even in low light. The camera further offers interchangeable DJI DL lenses or optional Leica M lenses via a detachable mount. The Ronin 4D also has built-in ND filters with nine different stops.

DJI lists several accessories on its website, including a wireless monitoring system, which allows users to remotely view the camera’s video feed and adjust camera settings. For storage, the camera uses USB SSDs, CF Express Type B cards or DJI’s own PROSSD 1TB SSDs. The DJI Ronin 4D system also offers built-in microphones and two 3.5mm jacks for audio and an external microphone. The company also offers an audio extension with two XLR inputs, an SDI output, and a timecode output.

The Ronin 4D-6K has a suggested retail price of 6999 euros and will be available in December. The 8k variant costs 10,999 euros, comes with a DJI PROSSD 1TB storage module and will appear on the market at a later date. Both variants come with Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera, the lidar rangefinder, a monitor, a battery, handles and a storage case.
