DJI has announced the Osmo Action 3 action cam. The successor to the DJI Action 2 is notable for the touchscreens on the front and back and it also has a battery with a larger capacity.

The Osmo Action 3 differs from the design concept of its predecessor and in that respect more closely resembles the first model in the series, the Osmo Action. The new action cam no longer has the modular design with a range of magnetic accessories of the Action 2. This concept has been abandoned, although other accessories and additions are available, such as a waterproof case, a lens protector and various tripods. The camera is also waterproof without a case to a depth of 16 meters.

The Osmo Action 3 has a built-in system with which the camera can be directly attached to, for example, bars or helmets and there is an improved quick-release system. The new Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame housing allows this mounting system to be placed in a vertical orientation; according to DJI is that “perfect for social media platforms.” Users who want to film vertically need this included case.

What is also striking is that the Osmo Action 3 has two touchscreens. According to the manufacturer, this gives users the opportunity to consult the settings more easily, without having to move the camera to a different position.

Standard Combo

The action cam has a 1/1.7″ sensor that, like its predecessor, can record images in 4k120. With the new camera, this is at a field of view of 155 degrees. DJI’s electrical image stabilization RockSteady 3.0 also works when recording in 4k resolution. and 120fps.In addition, there is a function that can keep the horizon stable in images even when driving over large bumps or during 360-degree rotations, and there is also a function that correctly tilts the horizon up to an angle of 45 degrees, this function does not extend beyond 4k60 recording, according to DJI the camera has an “enhanced heat management system that allows continuous recording in 4k60 until the battery is empty.”

The battery has a capacity of 1770mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, allows recordings of up to 160 minutes. This concerns a test result at 25 degrees Celsius, 1080p/30 and without electrical image stabilization. This recording time will therefore decrease considerably if the image stabilization is used and, for example, images are recorded in 4k120. Charging from 0 to 80 percent takes 18 minutes and from 0 to 100 percent takes 50 minutes. The camera can withstand temperatures down to -20 degrees Celsius.

The Osmo Action 3 costs 359 euros in the form of the Standard Combo, which includes the so-called Extreme Battery of 1770mAh, as well as the Horizontal-Vertical Protective Frame housing, a quick-release mount and an Adhesive Base Kit. There is also a more extensive package with additional accessories for 459 euros.
