DJI adds real-time geofencing to drone control software
DJI has released a beta version of its new geofencing software to prevent users from flying their drones into areas where it is not allowed. Users need to refresh their drone’s firmware and update the app.
In a press release, the drone manufacturer says that, although it is a beta, anyone can use the software. DJI directs Android users to an apk installation file, while iOS users have to submit a request to access the geofencing software. The system is called Geospatial Environment Online, or GEO, and gives drone users access to real-time information about areas where drones are not allowed to fly. The system is based on information from the company Airmap and is intended to replace the previous, outdated no-fly system.
According to DJI, the beta software for the Phantom 3 and Inspire 1 drones will work and the test phase will not last very long, although the manufacturer does not give an exact time. After the beta phase, the final version of the new geofencing software is expected to be released soon.
Because GEO provides information in real time, temporary restrictions can be added to the list of areas where flying is prohibited. This can be useful, for example, in the event of forest fires or during events where many people gather. It is also possible to get an exemption from the no-fly zones; DJI can hand these out to people with a verified account and in case it is an advice instead of a ban.
DJI wants to use GEO to address concerns from authorities about nuisance from drones in certain areas. It is likely that in the long term legislation will be introduced in many countries that should restrict the use of drones. DJI had previously announced that it would release GEO.
