DisplayLink shows 5k resolution transmission over average USB cable

DisplayLink held a demonstration at CES where a 5k video signal was sent over a normal USB 3.0 cable. According to DisplayLink, the technology is particularly useful for linking laptops to 5k monitors.

In the demonstration, DisplayLink used an UltraSharp UP2715K 27″ monitor from Dell, Tweaktown writes. This screen offers a resolution of 5120×2880 pixels. A Microsoft Surface Pro III was connected via a USB 3.0 cable to a docking station from DisplayLink. This was reconnected to the 5k screen.

According to DisplayLink, the demonstration of its 5k technology shows that even laptops that cannot handle very high video resolutions via its docking station can still drive a screen with a 5k resolution. The manufacturer has developed its own chipset for this. It is not yet known when this will be available in concrete products.
