Disney+ will support Enhanced format DTS sound with IMAX
Disney+ has been streaming films with an IMAX aspect ratio for more than a year and this year it will add support for DTS. It is still unclear exactly when this support will become available.
In the press release Few details are shared from Disney, such as whether there will soon be support for DTS:X as a counterpart to Dolby Atmos, or whether it will remain with DTS-HD Master Audio or DTS 5.1. This addition will only be available at before Imax Enhanced certified devices, such as televisions from Sony and Hisense; not all televisions support DTS. In addition, it will be available via AV receivers from Denon, Marantz and JBL.
Disney+ mainly broadcasts Marvel films in the IMAX aspect ratio, which the company started in November 2021. These are shown with an aspect ratio of 1.9:1. This gives the films on TVs smaller black bars than the regular versions, which have a wider 2.35:1 ratio. Viewing movies in this unusual 1.9:1 aspect ratio does not require any specific supporting devices. The IMAX Enhanced films also support Dolby Atmos, so viewers will probably soon have the choice between sound from DTS or Dolby Labs.
