Disney+ will introduce ‘restrictions’ on account sharing in Canada
Disney+ tells Canadian subscribers it will introduce ‘restrictions’ from November to prevent account sharing. The streaming service may want to block sharing an account outside the household.
In an email to Canadian subscribers, Disney+ announces the upcoming restrictions and says the streaming service has adjusted the terms of use, writes Mobile Syrup. In those amended terms of use, the company indicates that an account may not be shared outside the household, by which it means that an account may not be used outside a residential address.
Disney+ says that the terms of use allow it to analyze accounts to see whether they meet this condition. If they don’t, Disney+ can limit or eliminate them. It is not clear whether Disney+ actually wants to implement these measures from November and how strict the company will be in this regard. For example, it is not known how the platform wants to deal with subscribers who are traveling.
In the terms of use, Disney+ talks about different Service Tiers; With some Tiers it would be possible to share an account outside a household. With the current subscriptions, there is no difference in the extent to which an account may be shared. Netflix does allow you to share accounts outside a household with subscription additions. Disney+ may also want to do this in the future.
Last August, Disney CEO Bob Iger indicated that he was looking into options to prevent account sharing. These measures would begin in 2024 or later. Streaming services claim to lose revenue due to account sharing. With these restrictions, the companies hope to get more accounts and thus continue to grow. Netflix introduced a surcharge of 4 euros per month in May to enable account sharing.
