Disney + will become 2 euros per month more expensive in February due to the addition of Star service
Disney + will increase the price of its monthly subscription. The price will go from 6.99 to 8.99 euros in Europe from 23 February next year. The price increase is related to the addition of the Star streaming service as a new part of Disney +.
As part of Disney Investor Day 2020, the company has announced that the price for the Disney + streaming service will go to € 8.99 per month from February 23, 2021, or € 89.99 for a full year. This price increase is due to the full integration of Star. According to Disney, Star will be added in the form of a new part within the streaming service, with new series, films and documentaries becoming available.
The company does not yet provide many details about which titles can be expected. But during the presentation, Rebecca Campbell of The Walt Disney Company announced that it includes TV series and movies from Disney Television Studios, FX and the Disney library. It will become a more adult-centric section with content from ABC, Freeform, Searchlight and 20th Century Studios brands. Star will have some similarities with the US-based service Hulu, except that Star will not be licensed for third-party content.
The company also released new figures on its subscriber numbers. Disney + now has 86.8 million paid subscribers worldwide. That number has been reached more than a year after the introduction of the service in November last year. Last month, Disney reported 73.7 million subscribers to Disney +. The company expects to have between 230 and 260 million subscribers by 2024.
