“Disney no longer wants to release its own films and series exclusively on Disney +”

Disney would plan to sell its TV series and movies to competitors, rather than making them exclusive to its Disney+ streaming service. Bloomberg reports this based on conversations with insiders.

The media company is investigating this possibility because it is currently running at a loss with streaming, writes Bloomberg. With this step, the company would like to earn more money with its homemade content. This would mean that Disney is changing its streaming strategy, as it has released its programs exclusively on the Disney + and US Hulu services in recent years.

It is not clear which ‘competitors’ are meant exactly, but it probably concerns other streaming services, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. These had already licensed content from Disney before the latter started its service in 2019. Disney has not yet commented on the news.

In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, Disney lost $1.47 billion at its streaming division. However, 12 million subscribers were added in the same quarter. Not long after the announcement of these financial results, then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek stepped down and was replaced by Bob Iger, who also served as CEO of the company from 2005 to 2020. On February 8, Disney will announce its first quarter financial results. During that presentation, Iger also reveals some of his plans as a new CEO.
