Discord will soon let users verify identity via linked accounts
Chat platform Discord will expand its Connections function in the coming weeks by adding Linked Roles. Here, when linking other accounts, users can show their Discord account more information so that they can verify their identity with other users.
Through Connections, Discord users can see, among other things, what kind of music other users are listening to via the music app Spotify or what kind of game they are playing. This function will be significantly expanded in the coming weeks, writes Discord. The platform had the expansion in October announced, but published more information about it on Monday. After adding Linked Roles, users can show more information from their linked accounts. This allows them to show other users their identity.
The platforms that will initially support this feature are Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Epic Games, Battle.net, League of Legends, Riot Games, Reddit, TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, Twitch, Instagram, Spotify, Facebook, GitHub, Crunchyroll, PayPal and eBay. The Discord bots for Destiny 2 (Charlemagne) and Roblox (Bloxlink) also support Linked Roles. The linked accounts are visible to the user through their Discord profile. There is also additional information, such as the number of followers via Instagram or reviews from buyers via eBay.
Linked Roles on Discord
Discord admins and moderators can also choose to offer special features to users who authenticate their accounts with Connections, such as access to certain channels, or assign server roles to verified accounts. For example, they can require that users who want to be considered for a special server role have a linked Steam account. From a server’s drop-down menu, users can view the requirements for each associated role. Each role is automatically assigned to their profile if they meet the conditions.
However, admins and moderators will not automatically gain access to users’ Connections information, even if accounts are linked before the user first visits the server. The user must manually log into a server’s Linked Roles feature before details of linked accounts can be accessed by admins and moderators. Furthermore, it is possible to get a Linked Role on a server without showing the linked accounts, if the user already meets the requirements.
Admins and moderators can use the Server Settings to determine which requirements users must meet for a special server role.
