Discord is experiencing outage this weekend

Gaming voice chat application Discord is experiencing a major outage this weekend. In some cases, users were unable to log in or send text messages and initiate voice chats. The problem would not be completely solved, but for a majority it is.

On the status page, Discord says that the problem lies with the Google Cloud Platform, which it uses to host all services. At its core, something goes wrong during the update process that every client goes through when the app starts, which works through to “different other layers of the software.” It is not yet clear where exactly the problem lies in that update process.

At the moment it labels this ‘major outage’ as ‘fixed’, the uptime indicator also shows green again and a short test shows that the app is currently working. However, Discord writes that it “continues to experience these network outages” and is working with Google to fix them.

Discord is a Slack-esque gaming chat app in which users can communicate via text and voice chat. The app supports servers, text channels, voice channels, direct chat friend lists, audiovisual media upload and linking, and more. The application has been on the market since 2015 and monetizes with Discord Nitro, a $5 per month payment package that gives users little extras like animated avatars and the ability to upload larger attachments.
