Dirt 5 has 120fps option on Xbox Series X
DiRT 5 supports 120fps when played on Xbox Series X. The racing game was part of a presentation on Thursday announcing new games, along with accompanying trailers of what the titles will look like on the Xbox Series X console.
After the release of the trailers, Robert Karp of developer Codemasters Cheshire announced that DiRT 5 can be played not only at 4k resolution and at 60fps on the Xbox Series X, but also at 120fps. As far as we know, this is the first title that has been officially confirmed to support this option. Microsoft confirms 120fps support with DiRT 5; on a special page, the company shows the games presented on Thursday and only the racing game specifically shows 120fps.
Karp further elaborated on the possibilities that the Xbox Series X offers as a console, but he did not provide any further explanation about the support for 120fps. As a result, it is still unknown whether the 120fps setting is associated with a lower resolution and whether it scales dynamically in that case. In theory, 4k and 120fps are also possible, but then the detail level and certain effects will probably be reduced here and there.
The general support of 120fps is not an exclusive feature of the Xbox Series X. The PlayStation 5 will also get that option. It is currently unknown whether DiRT 5 will also get that 120fps option on the PS5. By no means all owners of these consoles will be able to play games with the combination of 4k and 120fps. A television with HDMI 2.1 is also required for this. The majority of current televisions do not go further than HDMI 2.0, which means that 4k and 60fps is the limit. Hdmi 2.0 does not exclude 120 fps, by the way; TVs with suitable panels can simply achieve 120 fps via internal apps and that is also possible with external devices connected via HDMI, only then no 4k resolution is possible.
An exact release date of DiRT 5 is still unknown, but the racing game will in any case be released in October and will also be available for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
