AMD would introduce its next generation of desktop CPUs around September. That is what Digitimes claims based on its own sources at motherboard manufacturers. At the same time, the company states that Intel will release its Comet Lake S CPUs at the end of April.

According to Digitimes sources, AMD initially planned to announce the Ryzen 4000 CPUs, known internally as Vermeer, in May, Tom’s Hardware reports. The company was supposed to do this during Computex, but this show has been moved to the end of September due to the new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. According to Digitimes, AMD will now release the new CPUs around Computex in September.

AMD was not expected to immediately launch the next generation of Ryzen CPUs on the market in May, Computerbase also writes. Instead, the company may have planned to announce the CPUs in May, to release them later in the year. AMD did something similar when it released its Ryzen 3000 chips for desktops. The CEO of the tech company, Lisa Su, previously reported that the new CPUs will appear on the market at the end of 2020.

The Ryzen 4000 desktop processors will be based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture. This architecture uses an improved 7nm process from semiconductor manufacturer TSMC. The CPUs would still use socket AM4, which was introduced in 2017. The Vermeer CPUs will most likely be released at the same time as the 600 series chipsets, but will likely be compatible with older motherboards as well.

The upcoming desktop CPUs are not comparable to the recently released Ryzen 4000 laptop processors. AMD laptop CPUs are a generation ahead in terms of naming. The Ryzen 4000 laptop CPUs are therefore comparable to the current Ryzen 3000 desktop processors, which are based on the Zen 2 architecture.

Digitimes also states that Intel will release its upcoming Comet Lake S CPUs at the end of April. That is consistent with previous rumours. Z490 motherboards would be released in mid-May, according to the Taiwanese newspaper, where the H470 and B460 chipsets would follow a few weeks later.
