DICE has started pre-production for the next Battlefield game
Developer DICE has started pre-production on the next Battlefield game. That tells an anonymous source to insider Tom Henderson. DICE is said to have learned “valuable lessons” from Battlefield 2042, which was poorly received by fans of the franchise.
DICE is believed to be planning to roll back many of the changes Battlefield 2042 brought with it, an anonymous source says to Xfire journalist Tom Henderson. The journalist writes that it’s too early to comment on specific aspects of the game, but may be referring to Battlefield 2042 features that have received critical acclaim, such as the 128-player game modes and the ‘specialists’ class system. .
Originally, Battlefield 2042 was supposed to be the foundation for future games in the franchise. An ex-DICE developer tells Henderson that the next Battlefield game would “become almost a hero shooter.” The journalist claims that recent playtest and feedback sessions from DICE focused on the class system in Battlefield 2042, and that led to these plans being changed. For example, in the future, classes would be more closely linked to their specific role.
Furthermore, Henderson claims that the next Battlefield game will take place in the near future. However, it is not yet known what effect the Russian invasion of Ukraine will have on the setting. Battlefield 2042 revolves around a conflict between the US and Russia, but EA has taken Russia out of all its sports games as a result of the war in Ukraine and stopped selling its titles in Russia and Belarus.
Battlefield 2042 was released last year and was received negatively by fans, partly due to poor performance, but also due to changes from previous titles that DICE made in the game. EA internally calls Battlefield 2042 a “miss,” according to Henderson. The publisher recently slashed its revenue forecast for 2022 by $100 million due to poor reception of the game. DICE has indicated that it is addressing various aspects of the game, and recently released an improved scoreboard. In the longer term, DICE will tackle the game’s map design, among other things.
