Diagram shows alleged AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT PCB with chiplet architecture
A diagram of the alleged AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT has surfaced. The video card would have an architecture with a large GPU die and six smaller chiplets, which corresponds to previous reports. No release date has yet been announced.
The diagram shows the design of a video card PCB that is ‘close to a reference card’, writes Igor Walllossek of Igor’s Lab. Walllossek claims he based this schematic on “actual circuit boards and blueprints,” but says he couldn’t share them to protect his resources. Walllossek is a well-known name in the industry and regularly publishes accurate information about hardware.
The PCB layout confirms that the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT has a Navi 31 GPU with seven chiplets. In the middle is a large chip, which is expected to function as the GPU die. Around it are six smaller chiplets. The journalist does not share any specifications. According to previous rumors, the six smaller chiplets function as Infinity Cache. Each chiplet would have 16MB of cache, for a total of 96MB for the Radeon RX 7900 XT.
The video card is further powered by three 8-pin connectors, as shown in the diagram. That equates to a maximum power of 450W. Walllossek leaves open the option for AMD to switch to the new PCIe Gen5 connector, but indicates that it has not seen any concrete indications for this.
The PCB of the Radeon RX 7900 XT also offers space for twelve GDDR6 memory modules. That would mean that the video card can be equipped with a maximum of 24GB of vram. There are 21 VRMs around the GPU. Presumably sixteen of them are used for the gpu, two for the memory, two for the ‘soc’ and one for the vddci. The card would thus have eight phases, writes Walllossek. The video card also has three DisplayPort connections and an HDMI connector. There is no longer a USB-C port.
AMD’s first RDNA3 graphics cards are expected this year. CEO Lisa Sue recently emphasized to shareholders that the first video cards will appear ‘later this year’. The company previously confirmed that the upcoming architecture will be built from chiplets. The GPUs should offer up to 50 percent better performance per watt compared to RDNA2. The company also shares few details. There is no concrete release date yet and it is also not known when AMD will announce the GPUs.
