Developers Quit CyanogenMod And Make Fork Lineage OS
The best-known custom ROM for Android, CyanogenMod, is shutting down now that the company has stopped helping Cyanogen with development. The developers make a fork and then continue under the name Lineage OS.
The developers say the fork is necessary because they fear the company Cyanogen is selling the brand name. Moreover, CyanogenMod would have gotten a bad name due to recent developments and therefore a new name for the custom ROM for Android phones is also needed.
The announcement follows Saturday’s message, in which the company Cyanogen says it will stop nightlies and services as of December 31. Cyanogen, which grew out of the custom rom, will focus on creating add-ons for Android, rather than its own Android release. Cyanogen has helped develop CyanogenMod in recent years by providing funding and infrastructure for the download site. Also, many Cyanogen developers worked on CyanogenMod.
With Lineage, the developers want to build a new name in the field of custom roms on Android. CyanogenMod has been around since mid-2009 and the Cyanogen company is about three years old.
