Developers extend support for Linux 5.10 LTS kernel until the end of 2026
Linux developers Greg Kroah-Hartman and Sasha Levin will support the Linux 5.10 kernel until December 2026. Enough companies and organizations have committed to using the Linux kernel, so the developers want to support this kernel longer.
The new extended support term can be viewed at The Linux Kernel Archives. It states that kernel version 5.10 will not reach end of life status until December 2026. Previously, version 5.4 was the version that would be supported the longest. According to Phoronix, Kroah-Hartmen confirms that the kernel will now be supported longer as more organizations use the Linux version. Debian 11 and Android 12, among others, use Linux 5.10.
At the end of January, Kroah-Hartman reported that Linux 5.10 LTS would only be supported until December 2022. He said at the time that this decision was not final, but said he wanted to see more companies use the kernel. Otherwise, he wouldn’t know “whether it was worth supporting the kernel for more than two years.” Linux 5.10 LTS was released on December 13, 2020.
