Developers equip Fedora Server 22 with xfs file system

The Server edition of Fedora 22 will default to the xfs file system in the upcoming release. With that, Red Hat’s free Linux distribution follows its paid brother, known as Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

The xfs file system runs on top of lvm volumes, except on the boot sector as this is technically impossible. The file system is more scalable within cloud environments and can provide access to 500TB of storage. In addition, defragmentation can take place while the file system is in use.

The Fedora community equips the Server edition of Fedora with xfs by default in version 22, Phoronix discovered. This doesn’t mean that other file systems are impossible, though; these can still be set in the Anaconda installer.

Fedora 22 is expected to be released on May 19, while an alpha version is currently already available. According to the release notes, the new version also includes adds for Rolekit, a daemon that provides a stable d-bus interface for managing server roles.

Fedora is one of Red Hat’s three Linux distributions. In addition to the free Fedora, the American company also offers the free CentOS, which is also popular on servers. It mainly makes money from the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux distro. That distribution was already equipped with the xfs file system last year.
