Developers Compiling Chromium for ARM Windows 10

Last weekend, developers managed to compile Google’s open source browser Chromium for the ARM version of Windows 10 and for Windows 10 Mobile. The code will not be available online.

The browser also opens quickly, claims developer Jeremy Sinclair, who made the version for the ARM variant of Windows 10. He said it took a weekend of work to get the browser up and running. He uses a commit in the code to convert the browser to ARM64 architecture, but exactly how that works is unknown.

Developer Gustave Monce got the code and also ran the compiled browser on a Lumia 950. Phones like the Lumia 930 and older have a 32-bit soc and can therefore not execute the code. The developers have not put the code online and do not appear to be doing so.

The ARM version of Windows 10 is on some laptop models from recent years. Those laptops can run limited apps, because many Windows applications are made for x86 or x64. MSPoweruser hopes this move shows that Google wants to release Chrome for the ARM version of Windows 10.

Update, 9:29 AM: The article first stated that the code runs on Windows 10 Mobile, but that is not correct. The developer’s Lumia 950 runs on Windows 10.
