Developer stops with Kodi for second-generation Apple TV
The developer who wrote XBMC successor Kodi for the second generation Apple TV will soon no longer release updates for the media player. He says it simply takes too much work to maintain the software.
According to developer Memphiz, it takes a lot of work to maintain the software with the outdated hardware from 2011. As a result, the quality has deteriorated since the Frodo release. Thus, the media player software would be unstable and crash regularly.
Maintaining XBMC/Kodi for the second-generation Apple TV demanded more and more attention, the developer writes. The release of iOS 6 in particular caused a lot of work, he said, as much of the code had to be rewritten by software changes that Apple made. “Most work can only be accomplished through trial and error and careful reading of log files. That’s not how software development works in 2015.”
The upcoming release of Kodi, version 14.1, will be the last release suitable for the Apple TV 2. After that, support will only be provided through the open source software forum. No more updates will then appear. The source code of the program will certainly remain available until Kodi 15.0, according to the developer. What happens to the code afterwards is unknown.
