Developer shows Portal demo with HoloLens
A developer shows an augmented reality version of Portal in a movie. He shoots portals on walls in a real room, teleporting a signature square box from Valve’s game.
The video was created by game developer Kenny W, who says on Reddit that he’s bringing Portal’s mechanics to the HoloLens. He does not explain the project further, but the demo shows how he can shoot portals at walls, and move objects through them, just like in the game.
Instead of in a virtual level, the portals in the augmented reality version are placed on real walls. It can be seen that the ‘Companion Cube’ passing through the portals also reacts to objects in physical space. For example, the box remains on a table and can roll down a staircase.
Although the box passes through the portals without any problem, it is not possible for the wearer of the Hololens to step into the colored portal and tumble out the other side. A lifelike Aperture Science lab is therefore not yet a reality.
The demo is a proof-of-concept and not Kenny W’s first augmented reality project. He previously made a video showing what a Pokémon game could look like in combination with the HoloLens.
