Developer releases final version OpenMediaVault

A developer released the final version of OpenMediaVault on Monday. He started developing the free NAS server software for Linux almost five years ago. That happened as a fork of FreeNAS, which normally runs on FreeBSD.

OpenMediaVault 1.0 is a software package that allows a PC to be used as a NAS server. The software is released as a nas solution based on the Linux distribution Debian 7.0, better known as Wheezy. The developer claims that compared to FreeNAS, the software performs better on less powerful systems, such as the Raspberry Pi, Cubieboard and Cubox.

The nas server software does not use Apache to render the webgui, but the web server software Nginx. In addition, the dashboard has its own widgets and numerous bug fixes and additional security measures have been included in the release. For example, the ClamAV plugin automatically quarantines suspicious files and supports perfect forward secrecy, where temporary keys are used to encrypt data.

The former FreeNAS developer started in 2009 with the free NAS server software as a fork of FreeNAS, which is intended for the FreeBSD operating system and was also built from the ground up at the time. FreeNAS supports cifs/samba, upnp, BitTorrent, ssh, and ftp, among others.
