Developer makes Pokémon game for Pebble smartwatches
A developer has created a Pebble version of Pokémon. pebblemon! is a “mini Pokémon adventure” where players can encounter 251 Pokémon. The game is set in ‘several’ parts of the Johto region.
On Reddit, the developer claims to have created a graphics library that mimics the graphics of the Game Boy Color. To show this he made Pebblemon!. It doesn’t seem to be a complete port; the developer calls it a “mini Pokémon adventure on your wrist” on Rebble.
The game contains ‘all 251 Pokémon from the Game Boy Color games’. Players can reach higher levels and ‘unlock 22 different sprites’. Control is via the buttons on the side of the smartwatch.
Owners of the original Pebble are out of luck, according to the developer, it doesn’t have enough memory for the game. pebblemon! therefore only works on the Pebble Time, Pebble Time Round and Pebble 2. The game can be downloaded from the Rebble store, a community-developed alternative to Pebble’s services.
The Pebble Time and Time Round smartwatches appeared in 2015, Pebble 2 went on sale a year later. In late 2016, Fitbit acquired Pebble; Fitbit took the Pebble services offline in mid-2018.
