Developer makes downloadable multiplayer version of Super Mario 64

A developer has made a downloadable version of Super Mario 64. In that version it is possible to play with multiple characters that were not originally in the game. Other than that, nothing has changed in the game.

For the setup, users have to enter an IP address in a tool, together with the character they want to play with, after which the tool sets up the online connection and puts players together in the game world.

There is also a site where players can make arrangements to play together at certain times. Developer Kaze Emuar has offered the download for free and is trying to make a living from his creations through an account on Patreon, a crowdfunding site where users support project creators with a monthly fee.

Chances are Nintendo will try to take the mod offline. The Japanese company is not fond of fan creations based on old games and has often tried to take them offline.
