Canonical developer Kevin VanDine has introduced a game engine that should make it possible to create games for Ubuntu Touch, a variant of the operating system focused on mobile devices such as smartphones.

VanDine announced the engine, called Bacon2D, this week at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, Phoronix said. The engine is written for QML and uses the Box2D simulation engine.

Bacon2D helps game developers with, among other things, rendering graphics and provides them with a standard container, in which they can further develop their game. The engine has an editor, which should make it easier to create games.

According to VanDine, Bacon2D is primarily suitable for creating games for Ubuntu Touch, a variant of the operating system aimed at mobile devices. Canonical released the first stable release of this version with an SDK late last year.
