A developer has created a VR version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. It is a proof-of-concept in which the originally isometrically rendered game has been recreated in 3d using Unreal Engine 4.

Ádám Horváth shows on YouTube how he plays a level in the game. He controls the game with the controllers of the HTC Vive, of which the one in his left hand is represented in the game as a tablet, on which all commands and interface elements can be found.

The game has been recreated in 3D using Unreal Engine 4 and is based on OpenRA, an open source engine that can run the old Command & Conquer games on modern systems. Another developer, using the alias Slye_Fox, has created a mod for OpenRA that adapts the game’s isometric sprites to 3d models. This makes it possible to view the game world from all angles, rather than the single camera angle available in the original game.

Red Alert 2 was released for Windows PCs 16 years ago. The real-time strategy game takes place in the year 1972, in an alternate timeline of the cold war. The game was very well received and has an active community even today, as evidenced by the many mods that are still being released for it. In 2008 the successor to the game was released: Red Alert 3. Since then, except for an expansion to the third part, no new games have appeared in the series.
