Developer creates video capture card for Game Boy
Developer Sebastian Staacks has created a video capture card that works specifically for the Game Boy. It allows the user to record gameplay footage on the old handheld or stream it to their PC, without the need for an emulator.
Staacks writes in a blog post how exactly the GB Interceptor works. It is an adapter that the user can connect to an unmodified Game Boy to record a video from a game and stream it to a computer via USB. The developer emphasizes that GB Interceptor will not work on Game Boys that contain an HDMI port or on Game Boy clones that use emulators.
The GB Interceptor plugs into the cartridge port of the handheld. Then the user connects the desired game cartridge to the Interceptor itself. So the user can play the game on the Game Boy’s original hardware, while the GB Interceptor’s USB cable can be connected to a PC for video recording or streaming.
When plugging in the adapter, the PC should recognize it as a webcam so that the video can be saved. It seems that the GB Interceptor currently works best with Linux, Staacks notes. With Windows and Android, the video apps have trouble formatting the stream and with macOS it is not possible to record videos at all.
